Ford Sets a New Standard With the 100 MPGe Ford Focus

Since November, shoppers in New York, New Jersey and California have been able to order the all-new Ford Focus Electric, and by the end of 2012, the availability will expand to 15 markets. With a lithium-ion battery pack and a recharging time of just three hours, it's more than ready to take on the ever-expanding EV market. And already, it's setting new standards for electric vehicles - starting with its position as the first five-passenger electric vehicle to surpass the 100 MPGe mark.
What's MPGe? Well, like we said, the EV and alternative-fuel sectors continue to expand, and the EPA had to create a standard with which to measure the efficiency of these vehicles. So, late in 2010, they introduced miles per gallon-equivalent, based on their formula of energy consumption for electric vehicles. The formula says that every 33.7 kWh is equal to one gallon of gasoline. So, essentially, for every 100 miles driven in the Ford Focus EV, the amount of energy used is equal to one gallon of gasoline. Pretty impressive, don't you think?
The most important thing about this development, though, is that this is just one of the many extremely efficient cars in the Ford lineup. Group VP of Global Product Development, Derrick Kuzack, says, "The Focus Electric is a shining example of leading fuel-economy Ford is offering for each new vehicle. Whether people want a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or full battery-electric vehicle, we have a family of vehicles for them to consider, providing a range of options to best meet and support their driving habits and lifestyles."1
More specifically, more than one-third of Ford's lineup consists of vehicles that boast an EPA estimated 40 mpg or more. That's right, no matter which new Ford model best fits your lifestyle, you're sure to find one that's easy on your gas budget and the environment.
